Jump over with The Punch

Tim Coleman punch the log enduro

The punch is a technique that migrated from trials and his nowadays widely used in enduro riding. It's suitable for medium sized logs as it boosts a quick way to get over laying logs. Its goal is to balance the most of the work from the bike through its suspension system, as well as engine power control

We can sum it as a samll wheellie where riders push up the front wheel, making it punch the log at about 2/3 of its height. This makes the suspension to compress providing a lifting force that enables riders do ger the bike up over the log as smooth and fast as it gets. Like any wheelie, weight the pegs to compress the suspension. As the suspension rebounds, apply the right dose of throttle.

You should measure the height of the log to balance the distance where you start your wheelie. It sould be almos equal to the height of the log. If you make it to far you will miss the log and too close will make you ram it.

Throttle on smoothly until the rear wheel rebounds after hitting the log, this will make the rear wheel up onto it.

You can feel a bit fear of flipping the bike over, but this is a rare event, as when the rear wheel hits the log the front wheel tends to go down right on. With experience you should be able to get the timing and throttle balance right to land in perfect conditions on the other side of the log.

You should also get the habit of having your butt as much back as it can be (rear fender) when clearing the logs as this will heavily reduces the chance of going over the bars when things go wrong.
